Project Hail Mary Rocky Plush Review: 4+ Months With the Non-Talking Version

Front view of the Project Hail Mary Rocky plush

I bought the official Project Hail Mary Rocky 8-inch non-talking plush for my girlfriend in May 2026. She loved Rocky after we watched Project Hail Mary, so this was bought as a fan gift rather than as a traditional cuddly toy.

More than four months later, it still sits in our bookcase opposite the sofa where she can see it while we watch movies or read. That is where I think this Rocky plush makes the most sense: as a recognizable piece of Project Hail Mary merch for a fan, not as the world’s most practical stuffed animal.

Project Hail Mary Rocky Plush — 4.0/5

Quick verdict: This is a decent fan gift, but at $39.99 the value is much harder to justify. It is very soft, well stuffed and immediately recognizable as Rocky if you know the film. The trade-offs are that the colors look a little flatter in person, the shape is awkward to hug, and ours cannot really stand on its own without support.

Best for: Project Hail Mary fans who want a small display plush or movie collectible.

Skip if: you mainly want a traditional cuddly plush, need it to stand neatly by itself, or you expect premium build quality for a $39.99 plush.

What we like
  • Very soft material and good amount of stuffing
  • Recognizably Rocky if you have seen Project Hail Mary
  • No loose threads, holes, shedding or loss of shape after more than four months
  • Worked well as a gift for a big fan of the character
  • Shape recovered quickly after arriving slightly compressed
  • Official licensed merch with soft material and solid stitching
What could be better
  • Cannot really stand on its own without support
  • Awkward to cuddle because of the multiple long limbs
  • Colors look a little more faded in person than in Amazon’s listing images
  • Not many fine details; there is no traditional face or eyes
  • The unusual shape makes front/back/side orientation less obvious
Bottom line: I would still buy it for a big Project Hail Mary fan, but at $39.99 the weak self-standing ability, simple detailing and awkward cuddle shape make the value only average.

How we tested the Rocky plush

  • Purchased: May 16, 2026
  • Variant: non-talking
  • Received: about one week after ordering
  • Primary owner: my girlfriend
  • Main use: display in our bookcase opposite the sofa
  • Secondary use: occasional handling rather than regular cuddling
  • Cleaning: not washed or cleaned yet
  • Condition after 4+ months: no loose threads, holes, shedding or noticeable loss of stuffing

Amazon identifies this as the officially licensed Project Hail Mary Rocky collector plush, model 642365, made by Toynk. The listing describes the non-talking version as roughly 8 inches and made with velboa fabric plus polyester stuffing.

I bought it because my girlfriend loved Rocky

This was another gift for my girlfriend. After seeing Project Hail Mary, Rocky was one of the characters she liked most, so a Rocky plush was an easy gift idea.

I specifically chose the non-talking version. For us, the point was having Rocky sitting in the room as decoration. A talking feature felt more like something aimed at a child and was not something we particularly needed.

That choice still feels right. We rarely pick it up specifically to play with it; it sits in the bookcase where she can see it from the sofa.

It looks like Rocky — but Amazon’s photos are a little flattering

The unusual body shape is recognizable if you know the character.

If you have seen the film, you will know who it is supposed to be. That matters more to me than whether every detail is perfect.

I do think the Amazon listing makes the colors look a little richer than our plush does in person. Ours looks slightly more faded, and the design is fairly simple. There is no conventional face with eyes, and there are not many small decorative details.

That said, it has enough of Rocky’s distinctive shape to work as fan merch.

The material is very soft and the stuffing is good

The softness is one of the strongest parts of the product. The outer material feels very soft, and the plush is filled well: not flat, not overstuffed and not lumpy.

It also recovered its shape quickly after arriving slightly compressed in the packaging.

After more than four months, the material still feels roughly the same as when it was new.

It is not a particularly good cuddling plush

This is where Rocky’s character design works against the plush format.

The multiple long limbs make it awkward to hold against your body compared with a normal teddy bear or our Wild Republic bald eagle plush. It is soft enough to cuddle, but the shape is not naturally comfortable.

That is why ours has ended up as decoration rather than something my girlfriend regularly sleeps with or hugs.

It cannot really stand on its own

This is the biggest functional weakness in our unit.

Attempting to position Rocky upright.

Without support, ours tends to slump rather than stand cleanly.

We keep something underneath the body so it sits more neatly in the bookcase. Without support, it tends to lie or slump rather than balance properly on its limbs.

For a product I primarily use as decoration, I would have preferred a design that could hold a stable display pose by itself.

Build quality has held up well

The construction has been solid so far. I cannot find loose threads, holes, badly crooked limbs or shedding fibers.

It has not lost stuffing or meaningfully changed shape either. We do not throw this one around as much as the bald eagle plush, so I would describe this as normal household durability rather than torture testing.

I think the color may have changed slightly or simply looks flatter than I remembered from the listing, but structurally it still looks good.

The non-talking version was the right choice for us

Amazon sells this listing as the non-talking color/variant. I deliberately did not prioritize a talking function because this was bought mainly as a display item for an adult fan.

If I were buying for a child who wanted an interactive toy, the talking version might be more interesting. For our use, silence is not a limitation at all.

Value at $39.99

At the current Amazon price of $39.99, I think the value is only average.

The material is soft and the build quality has held up well, but the simple detailing, awkward cuddle shape and poor ability to stand on its own make it hard for me to call this a premium-feeling $40 plush.

I would still consider it for someone who specifically loves Rocky, because the appeal is largely the licensed Project Hail Mary connection rather than the plush design alone.

Rocky plush vs. our Wild Republic Bald Eagle plush

We own both, so I can make a useful direct comparison.

Area Rocky plush Wild Republic Bald Eagle
Softness Very soft Also soft, but feels a little more premium overall
Cuddling Awkward because of the long limbs Much easier and more comfortable to hold
Display Needs support to sit/stand neatly Can stand independently
Visual appeal Mainly appealing if you know and like Rocky More conventionally attractive as a plush animal
Build impression Good Feels slightly better quality and more premium to me

The eagle is the better plush in a general sense. Rocky is the better gift specifically for a Project Hail Mary fan.

Why I rate the Project Hail Mary Rocky Plush 4.0/5

My overall rating is 4.0/5. The score reflects the product we actually received and evaluates its value at the current $39.99 Amazon price, while also accounting for its weak self-standing ability and less-premium presentation.

Criterion Weight Score Why
Character likeness & design 25% 4.0/5 Clearly recognizable as Rocky to fans, but colors/details look weaker than the listing.
Softness & stuffing 15% 4.6/5 Very soft with a good, even amount of filling.
Build quality & durability 20% 4.5/5 No loose threads, holes, shedding or loss of shape after more than four months.
Display usability 15% 3.2/5 The biggest weakness: ours does not stand neatly without support.
Fan/gift appeal 15% 4.6/5 My girlfriend wanted Rocky and remains happy to have it on display.
Value 10% 2.8/5 At $39.99, the licensed character appeal is doing a lot of the work; the plush itself does not feel premium enough to justify the price.
Weighted rating 4.0/5 Rounded to one decimal place.

Who should buy it?

  • Best for: Project Hail Mary fans who want recognizable Rocky merch.
  • Best for: adult fans looking for a small shelf/bookcase display piece.
  • Potentially good for: children who specifically like Rocky, although the non-talking version is fairly simple.
  • Skip if: your main priority is a conventional cuddly teddy-style plush.
  • Skip if: you need a plush that reliably stands by itself.
  • Price-sensitive buyers: at $39.99, I think the value is much less compelling unless you specifically want official Rocky merch.

Would I buy it again?

Yes — because my girlfriend genuinely wanted Rocky.

If this one disappeared tomorrow, I would look for another one for her. That does not mean I think it is the best plush toy mechanically; it means it succeeds at the thing that mattered most for us: being a recognizable Rocky gift for someone who likes the character.

If I had to describe it to a friend in one sentence: it is a soft plush that clearly looks like Rocky from Project Hail Mary, so it makes a good gift if the person is a real fan of the film.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Project Hail Mary Rocky plush official merchandise?

Yes. The Amazon listing identifies this Toynk model as officially licensed Project Hail Mary merchandise.

Does the non-talking Rocky plush make sounds?

No. I bought the non-talking version specifically because we wanted it mainly as decoration.

Is it soft?

Yes. Ours is very soft and evenly stuffed. Softness is one of its better qualities.

Can it stand on its own?

Ours cannot do this well. We use support underneath the body so it displays more neatly in our bookcase.

Is it good for cuddling?

Not especially. The material is soft, but Rocky’s multiple long limbs make the shape awkward compared with a normal plush animal.

Is it worth $40?

At $39.99, I think it is mainly worth considering if you specifically want official Rocky merch. The softness and build quality are good, but the display stability and simple detailing keep the value from feeling premium.
