Alcon TOTAL30 Contact Lenses Review: 4 Months vs Biofinity & Air Optix
My Alcon TOTAL30 contact lenses review after nearly four months of daily use: 4.3/5. These monthly lenses are comfortable enough that I can usually barely feel them, even after roughly 15–16 hours of wearing them while working at a computer, riding my moped or playing pickleball. My distance vision stays sharp, and inserting and removing the lenses is easy. I like them considerably more than the Air Optix plus HydraGlyde lenses I used previously.
They are not perfect. Towards the end of each monthly cycle they start to feel less supple, and I sometimes experience dryness, irritation and redness. I also remember Biofinity feeling even better, particularly with fewer red-eye problems, so I expect to trial that brand again after checking the fit with an eye-care professional. TOTAL30 remains a genuinely good option for me, but it is not necessarily my favourite monthly lens.

Alcon TOTAL30 monthly contact lenses — 4.3/5
Quick verdict: Comfortable, clear and good value for my long daily routine. A very noticeable step up in comfort from my previous Air Optix plus HydraGlyde lenses, but I sometimes experience red or dry eyes and they feel less comfortable late in the month.
Best for: someone already fitted for TOTAL30 who needs clear everyday vision and wants a monthly lens that is easy to handle, especially if their previous lenses felt uncomfortable.
Skip if: you need to sleep in your lenses, already have persistent red or painful eyes, or expect every lens to suit every wearer without an individual contact-lens fitting.
My next purchase: I plan to revisit Biofinity because I remember slightly better comfort. If it does not suit me as well as I recall, I would happily consider TOTAL30 again.
What I like
- Comfortable enough for most of my 15–16-hour days
- Sharp, stable vision for computer work, moped riding and pickleball
- Easy to insert, remove and handle
- No torn lenses or early discards in my experience
- About €12.20/month for both eyes at my purchase prices, excluding care solution
Where they fall short
- Occasional dryness, irritation and redness
- My lenses feel less supple and comfortable in the latter half of the month
- Not approved for sleeping or even short naps
- My remembered experience with Biofinity was a little more comfortable
Bottom line: 4.3/5. I like TOTAL30 and think my two six-packs were worth the money. They are among the more comfortable lenses I have worn. But I cannot ignore the redness and end-of-month drop in comfort, and Biofinity is the comparison I most want to repeat.
How I tested TOTAL30: original purchases and real everyday wear
My test conditions are unusually varied for a monthly lens: long periods at a computer, outdoor moped journeys, and active indoor pickleball sessions. I use the same pair throughout my day rather than changing lenses for sport. I take my lenses out at night and normally replace them once a month, although I sometimes rely on remembering the first of the month rather than tracking the exact opening date. A monthly lens should never be kept beyond its prescribed replacement interval simply because it still feels usable.
The original photos on this page show the actual boxes and individual lenses I own, not manufacturer renders, AI-generated mockups or a similar product. I have not measured oxygen transfer, assessed corneal health or timed vision acuity in a controlled test.
Comfort during a 15–16-hour day: the main reason I like TOTAL30
Most of the time I barely notice TOTAL30 on my eyes. I can feel them a little, but not in the constant, distracting way I remember from Air Optix plus HydraGlyde. Those older lenses felt markedly larger to me and caused enough irritation and discomfort that I eventually discarded some before using them all. TOTAL30 was a significant improvement in everyday comfort for me.
That is a difference in how the lenses felt, not a measurement showing that Air Optix is physically larger. In fact, manufacturer and retailer specifications list a 14.2 mm diameter for standard TOTAL30 and Air Optix plus HydraGlyde. Lens shape, base curve, material, fit and individual eyes can all affect the wearing experience; a single wearer’s sense of size is not the physical diameter.
I can wear TOTAL30 for most of a normal day and remain quite comfortable. However, sometimes my eyes become a little dry, irritated or red, and I have started using lubricating eye drops. I cannot establish whether that is caused by the lens itself, long hours, screen time, the cleaning solution, my care routine or a combination. Persistent symptoms warrant an eye-care appointment rather than simply changing brands and guessing.

My real weakness: comfort declines in the last part of the month
The lens usually feels best in approximately the first week or two after I open a fresh blister. Later in the monthly cycle it starts to feel a little stiffer and less comfortable. This has not forced me to throw lenses away early, but it is the biggest everyday comfort limitation I have noticed.
Alcon markets its Water Gradient surface as supporting comfort throughout the month. My personal experience is more qualified: these lenses remain wearable for me, but the end of the month does not feel exactly like the beginning. I have not measured surface stiffness or deposits. Importantly, my current cleaning practice could influence this pattern, so I cannot attribute it conclusively to lens material ageing.
Clear vision at the computer, on my moped and during pickleball
Vision is one of TOTAL30’s strongest aspects for me. I find it sharp and stable throughout the day, with no meaningful recurring blur. I wear the lenses for hours in front of computer screens, on outdoor moped trips, and while following fast-moving balls during pickleball. They work well for all three activities in my own experience.
They are also simple to put in and remove. The lenses feel soft and smooth, and I have not had one tear, fold irreversibly or need throwing away before its scheduled replacement. I cannot claim a zero-defect rate for the product generally; this is just what happened with the relatively small number I have used.
Short naps, red eyes and why this is not an overnight lens
I have occasionally fallen asleep with TOTAL30 still in for 15–20 minutes. Afterwards my eyes have looked quite red. This was not a safe intended use of the product, so I would not grade it as a design failure for not tolerating sleep. It does matter to my personal story because I remember less redness during short naps in Biofinity, which is one reason I am curious to try that lens again.
But I would not recommend napping in TOTAL30 or selecting a different lens simply to make sleeping in contacts seem harmless. If redness keeps recurring during ordinary wear, or you experience eye pain, light sensitivity, discharge or sudden blur, remove your lenses and seek prompt professional assessment. See CDC guidance on contact-lens infections and warning signs.
What I paid: TOTAL30 monthly cost for two different prescriptions
| My order | Date | Prescription | Price paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| One box of 6 TOTAL30 lenses for left eye | June 20, 2026 | -4.50 D | €34.49 |
| One box of 6 TOTAL30 lenses for right eye | June 24, 2026 | -4.25 D | €38.69 |
| Two six-packs combined | June 2026 | 6 pairs, one lens per eye per month | €73.18 |
With six lenses for each eye, these two boxes represent six months of wear for both eyes when replaced on schedule. My actual combined purchase price works out to €12.20 per month, or about €0.40 per day when spreading that cost over roughly 30 days per month. That excludes contact-lens solution, cases, eye drops, appointments and shipping if applicable. These are historical purchase prices, not claims about today’s Amazon price.
I consider this good value because of the clear vision and the large comfort improvement I felt over Air Optix. Whether TOTAL30 is cheap in your country depends on local prices and which alternatives your optometrist has fitted successfully.
TOTAL30 vs Biofinity vs Air Optix plus HydraGlyde: what I actually noticed
| My comparison | TOTAL30 | Biofinity | Air Optix plus HydraGlyde |
|---|---|---|---|
| My experience | Current daily lenses; used for nearly four months | Used before, around a year ago; comparing from memory | Used before; some discarded due to discomfort |
| How comfortable? | Very comfortable most of the day | I remember slightly better comfort | Noticeably worse for me; felt bulky/irritating |
| Dryness / redness | Occasional symptoms, especially relevant late in month or after naps | I remember fewer symptoms; not retested yet | More irritating in my previous use |
| Vision / handling | Sharp, stable and easy | No recent controlled side-by-side comparison | Not enough details to make a fair comparative vision score |
| Would I choose it next? | Yes, if Biofinity does not feel better on a properly fitted retrial | Likely my next trial | No, based on my previous discomfort |
All three are well-known reusable monthly silicone-hydrogel lens families, but comfort is individual. This is not a blinded or simultaneous test, so memory, changed prescription or different care routines could affect the results. The Biofinity comparison is a useful personal reference point, not proof that Biofinity is medically better or safer for my eyes.
One technical nuance: CooperVision lists Biofinity as suitable for daily wear or a professionally directed extended-wear schedule of up to six nights/seven days. TOTAL30’s manufacturer explicitly restricts its product to daily wear. An extended-wear indication never replaces personal fitting advice or eliminate infection risk. See CooperVision Biofinity specifications and CDC lens-wear guidance.
Care routine: what I did, and what I should change
I currently use HealthCare by Amazon All-in-One Contact Lens Fluid. I remove TOTAL30 each evening, discard the previous solution and put fresh solution in my lens case. I have not consistently rubbed and rinsed each lens before soaking. That is an important limitation of my personal test, not advice that other people should follow.
The CDC recommends rubbing and rinsing reusable lenses with the recommended disinfecting solution, using fresh solution each time and cleaning/air-drying the case appropriately. Alcon also says TOTAL30 needs daily removal, cleaning and disinfection. Different solutions have different instructions; follow the specific approved product directions and the guidance of your optometrist. Never use water for lens storage or cleaning.
Because I have skipped an important cleaning step, I cannot tell how much of my late-month discomfort comes from TOTAL30 itself versus my routine. This is precisely why I would not present my experience as a laboratory comparison of lens materials.

Verified TOTAL30 specifications, not hands-on measurements
| Specification | Standard TOTAL30 sphere lens | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Brand / model | Alcon TOTAL30 (standard sphere) | Different from TOTAL30 Toric, Multifocal or other product variants |
| Replacement schedule | Monthly, daily wear | Remove nightly; do not nap or sleep in them |
| Pack reviewed | Six lenses per box | Two boxes required for my two different powers |
| Lens material | Lehfilcon A silicone hydrogel | Manufacturer specification, not personally tested composition |
| Base curve / diameter | 8.4 mm / 14.2 mm | Fit parameters; not interchangeable based on power alone |
| Water content | 55% core; near 100% outer surface in manufacturer testing | Water Gradient design does not guarantee every wearer will be comfortable |
| Oxygen transmissibility | Dk/t 154 at -3.00 D | Standardised reference value, not directly measured in my own powers |
These specifications come from Alcon’s official TOTAL30 technical page. The manufacturer also describes Water Gradient and CELLIGENT surface technology, including deposit-resistance findings from laboratory research. I have not independently verified those technologies or confirmed that they prevented deposits in my own use.

My transparent 4.3/5 TOTAL30 rating
JonTests uses a weighted editorial score for genuine hands-on products. These criterion ratings are subjective judgments grounded in my described wear, not clinical measurements. I scored what I actually experienced and gave greater weight to all-day comfort and visual clarity.
| Criterion | Weight | My score | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily comfort | 30% | 4.2/5 | Almost unnoticeable most of the day, but some dryness and redness |
| Vision quality | 25% | 4.8/5 | Sharp and stable for screens, riding and pickleball |
| Handling | 10% | 4.7/5 | Easy insertion/removal; no damaged or prematurely discarded lenses |
| Comfort consistency through the month | 20% | 3.4/5 | The first two weeks feel better than the final weeks |
| Value at my purchase price | 15% | 4.7/5 | €12.20/month for two eyes, excellent relative to my experience with Air Optix |
Calculation: (4.2 × 0.30) + (4.8 × 0.25) + (4.7 × 0.10) + (3.4 × 0.20) + (4.7 × 0.15) = 4.315, rounded to 4.3/5. This does not grade how safe it is to sleep in TOTAL30: that use is explicitly outside the product’s permitted wear schedule. Read How I Test for the site’s broader first-hand review method.
Who should consider TOTAL30 — and who should look elsewhere?
Worth discussing with your optometrist: If you currently wear uncomfortable monthly lenses and would like an alternative, my experience shows how much the comfort can differ between models even though they have similar-looking specifications. I also find TOTAL30 convenient for a mixture of desk work, riding and sport, with excellent everyday vision.
Look elsewhere or get assessed first: If you often need to sleep or nap with lenses in, TOTAL30 is not suitable for that use. If your eyes are repeatedly red, sore or dry, simply buying a different brand online is not a substitute for investigating the cause. If you are a first-time contact lens wearer, get a professional fitting, prescription and care instructions rather than picking a lens from another person’s review.
Would I buy TOTAL30 again? Yes, I think they are good and genuinely affordable at my purchase prices. But my next step is a properly fitted Biofinity retrial because my previous experience suggests it may suit me even better. If not, TOTAL30 would remain my fallback.
Common questions about my TOTAL30 experience
Are TOTAL30 lenses comfortable for 15–16 hours?
They usually are for me: I barely notice them for most of my day, including on screen-heavy days. But my occasional dryness and redness mean I would not promise that 15–16 hours is appropriate for everybody. Follow your own eye-care professional’s wearing schedule.
Do they feel as good on day 30 as day 1?
Not quite in my experience. I feel they are more comfortable in the first one to two weeks and slightly stiffer or less comfortable later. My incomplete cleaning routine is a possible confounding factor; I cannot prove the lens material caused this change.
Can you take a nap with TOTAL30 in?
No: the manufacturer says TOTAL30 is for daily wear only, not sleeping. I experienced very red eyes after some 15–20-minute naps, which is one more reason not to do it. Remove them before sleeping, even briefly.
Is TOTAL30 better than Biofinity?
I cannot call one universally better. TOTAL30 is my current lens and I like it, but I remember Biofinity providing slightly better comfort and less redness. That memory is about a year old, and I have not made a recent controlled comparison.
Are they better than Air Optix plus HydraGlyde?
For me, clearly yes in day-to-day comfort. Air Optix felt irritating and bulky enough that I discarded some; TOTAL30 is much easier to live with. Both have a listed 14.2 mm diameter, so “feels larger” is not proof of a physically larger lens.
What does a six-pack cost each month?
My two boxes cost €73.18 combined and covered both eyes for six months, so €12.20 per month for lenses at my 2026 purchase prices. Lens solution, cases, shipping and care appointments cost extra.

This page combines my original 2026 purchases, actual wear and four of my own product photos with technical and safety facts from Alcon, Alcon UK daily-wear guidance, CooperVision Biofinity specifications, and the CDC’s contact-lens care guidance. I did not medically examine my eyes, measure oxygen delivery, or test Biofinity and Air Optix side by side against this 2026 TOTAL30 purchase.
