Weleda Citrus Fresh Deo Spray Review: 3 Bottles, 17 Months
My Weleda Citrus Fresh Deo Spray review after about 17 months: 3.8/5. I love the fragrance. It smells vividly of lemon but in a way I find fresh, pleasant and relatively natural, and I can still notice the scent around eight hours after application in my normal routine. I have used three 100 ml bottles, with the last one now down to roughly 10%.
But there is a catch: I still develop noticeable body odour when I sweat heavily or play sport. The citrus scent makes that smell less unpleasant to me, but it does not prevent it reliably. The deodorant also stings quite badly when I put it on freshly shaved underarms. So although I have repurchased it and genuinely enjoy using it, I am now trying a different deodorant to see whether I can get better odour control at a lower price.

Weleda Citrus Fresh Deo Spray, 100 ml — 3.8/5
Quick verdict: One of the nicest-smelling deodorants I have personally used, with a reliable spray and convenient glass bottle. Much less convincing for sweaty exercise.
Best for: people who prioritise an uplifting citrus scent, an aluminium-free spray and relatively light daily activity.
Skip if: preventing noticeable body odour during sport is your top priority, you want an antiperspirant that reduces sweating, or you are sensitive to fragrance/alcohol on recently shaved skin.
Repurchase verdict: Maybe. I like it, but I have already bought a different deodorant to compare because I want more protection and perhaps a lower price.
What I liked
- Excellent, fresh, lemon-forward citrus fragrance
- Scent noticeable for around eight hours in my everyday routine
- Even and dependable pump application
- Dries relatively quickly and normally feels pleasant
- Good bottle longevity across my regular use
What I would improve
- Noticeable sweat/body odour still develops when active
- Can sting significantly after shaving
- €12 per 100 ml feels somewhat expensive
- Not an antiperspirant or a solution for reducing sweat
- Glass bottle is breakable; I have not assessed travel durability
Bottom line: 3.8/5. I buy this for its wonderful lemon scent and easy use, not because it reliably keeps my underarms odour-free throughout a sweaty day. I might purchase it again for fragrance alone, but I am testing alternatives before committing to another bottle.
My purchase history and 17-month experience
I have purchased three 100 ml bottles in total. I no longer remember the date or price of the first bottle. I do remember buying two more bottles on May 13, 2025, at €12 each, with no promotional discount or other compensation. By October 2026, I have used almost all three and estimate that roughly 10% of the last bottle remains.
The long ownership history is meaningful: I clearly liked the scent and basic experience enough to keep using it, even though it is not perfect. But I cannot calculate an exact cost per day or lifetime bottle duration from incomplete purchase records, and I will not invent those numbers.
| Personal test fact | What I know | What I don’t know |
|---|---|---|
| Bottles owned and used | 3 × 100 ml, third nearly empty (~10% left) | Exact remaining volume not measured |
| Documented purchase memory | May 13, 2025: 2 × €12 = €24 | Date and price of my first bottle |
| Typical use | After an evening shower, sometimes again in the morning | Exact daily volume per spray |
| Application | 2–3 sprays per armpit | Measured spray dose |
| Fragrance duration | Noticeable to me for roughly 8 hours | Controlled odour suppression over 8 hours |
Fragrance: the best reason to buy this deodorant
The Weleda Citrus Fresh smell is my favourite thing about it by far. It is lemon-forward, relatively strong, and much nicer to me than the generic supermarket deodorants I have previously used. It has a fresh quality that I associate with real citrus rather than the heavy sweetness of some fragranced products.
That is a subjective taste judgment, not a blind fragrance comparison. I cannot name the exact supermarket deodorants I used earlier, so I will not claim to have tested Weleda against named competitors.
With my normal routine, I can still detect some of the citrus fragrance around eight hours later, depending on how close I am to the underarm. Importantly, being able to smell lemon is not the same as proving eight hours of effective sweat-odour prevention. I have noticed sweat odour underneath the lingering citrus.

Does Weleda Citrus Fresh prevent body odour during exercise?
Not reliably enough for my needs. I sweat quite a lot throughout the day and am physically active. When I exercise or play sport, I can still develop noticeable underarm odour despite using the Weleda spray. The lingering lemon fragrance can make the overall smell more pleasant, but I would not describe my underarms as consistently odour-free after a sweaty session.
This is the reason I am considering switching. A deodorant is ultimately meant to address odour, and for me the impressive fragrance does not fully compensate for weaker performance when I need it most.
Weleda describes the product as an aluminium-free deodorant, not an antiperspirant. It uses fragrance and ingredients intended to reduce odour without preventing perspiration. It is not designed to stop sweating. My criticism concerns my own experience with odour control, not a claim that the product should physically prevent sweat.
I have not done a controlled one-underarm-versus-the-other test, used an odour meter or rated results with blinded assessors. And I cannot claim a particular number of hours of odour protection simply because the fragrance sometimes remains noticeable.
Application, skin feel and the shaving problem
I normally spray it after showering in the evening. Two or three sprays per underarm cover the area well for me. The nozzle spreads the liquid evenly, the spray dries relatively quickly, and my skin usually feels comfortable afterwards, without a sticky residue that bothers me.
The exception is freshly shaved skin. If I shave my underarms and then apply the spray, it can sting quite badly. I have occasionally felt some irritation right after showering too. This is enough of a drawback that I would not recommend spraying it onto freshly shaved or visibly irritated underarms.
Alcohol appears first in Weleda’s published ingredient list, and its fragrance contains citrus essential oils and other fragrance components such as limonene, linalool and citral. That may matter for sensitive skin, but I have not performed an allergy test or established which ingredient caused my stinging. Someone with known fragrance sensitivities should check the complete ingredients before use, not assume that “natural” always means non-irritating.

Pump and glass bottle: a design that has worked well
One consistent positive across these bottles is how easy the product is to apply. The non-aerosol pump works reliably in my experience, distributes the spray well and is straightforward to press. The cap is practical, and the green 100 ml glass bottle is easy to hold.
I have used mine at home rather than regularly carrying it in a gym bag. I therefore cannot claim first-hand travel durability, resistance to leaking under pressure, or survival after being dropped. Glass is also breakable, so anyone carrying it should use reasonable care.

Weleda describes the glass bottle as recyclable and the spray as non-aerosol. I have not performed an environmental lifecycle comparison against aerosol cans or plastic roll-ons, so that is a product-design description rather than an independent sustainability ranking.
Is Weleda Citrus Fresh worth €12 per 100 ml?
For the fragrance, I can see why I kept buying it. The two bottles I bought on May 13, 2025, cost €24 in total, which is €12 per bottle or €0.12 per ml. These are my historical prices, not a live retail quotation.
I also think the bottle lasts well relative to how much I use it. Still, €12 feels a little expensive for a deodorant that sometimes fails my main performance requirement: keeping unwanted odour down during a very active day. I would be happier paying that amount if protection were more dependable.
My purchase history shows a preference for Weleda, but not blind loyalty. I have now bought another deodorant to test whether I can get a better balance of odour control, skin comfort and price. It would be premature to name that alternative or call it better before I have tested it.
Weleda deodorant vs an antiperspirant: what are you buying?
| What you want | Weleda Citrus Fresh (my experience) | What to consider instead |
|---|---|---|
| A pleasant lemon fragrance | Excellent in my opinion | Other fragranced deodorants may differ in scent |
| Odour control on a quiet day | Reasonably pleasant for my usual routine | A deodorant formulated for longer odour control may suit you |
| Odour control during sweaty sport | Not good enough for me | Consider a product intended for stronger odour control |
| Less actual sweating | Not an antiperspirant; does not aim to reduce perspiration | An antiperspirant, typically with active aluminium salts, targets sweat reduction |
| Comfort immediately after shaving | Can sting significantly in my experience | Wait for irritated skin to settle; choose a product appropriate for sensitive skin |
This is a comparison of product categories and my own Weleda experience, not a head-to-head test of a particular antiperspirant. I have not measured sweat volume or tested all deodorant formulations. For my daily activity level, stronger odour performance is the main improvement I am seeking.
Who should buy it, and who should skip it?
I recommend Weleda Citrus Fresh to: people who put fragrance high on their priority list, particularly fans of authentic-feeling lemon scents; those who prefer a refillable-style glass spray bottle over an aerosol; and users with relatively light daily activity who do not expect to rely on it for a sweaty sports session.
I would skip it if: you need highly reliable odour control when you sweat a lot, want a product that reduces sweating, are sensitive to alcohol-based fragranced products, or frequently apply deodorant immediately after shaving. In my experience, those are precisely the situations that reveal its limitations.
Would I repurchase? Maybe. I have already used almost three bottles, which makes clear that I genuinely like it. But now that I am looking harder at odour control and price, I will compare the new deodorant I have bought before purchasing a fourth Weleda.
How I calculated my 3.8/5 weighted rating
These scores are personal editorial judgments from repeated use, not dermatological testing, a controlled study or an aggregate of other customers’ reviews. I weighted odour control most heavily because it is a deodorant’s primary job for me, even though the fragrance is excellent. This explains why the overall score is lower than my scent score.
| Criterion | My rating | Weight | Weighted contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body-odour control in my daily routine | 2.8/5 | 35% | 0.980 |
| Citrus fragrance and pleasantness | 4.9/5 | 25% | 1.225 |
| Skin comfort and tolerance | 3.7/5 | 15% | 0.555 |
| Pump, application and bottle | 4.8/5 | 10% | 0.480 |
| Price and overall value | 3.8/5 | 15% | 0.570 |
| Total | — | 100% | 3.810 → 3.8/5 |
Body-odour control in my daily routine (2.8/5): The lemon scent freshens me up, but noticeable sweat odour still develops when I exercise or sweat heavily; I would choose another product for sport.
Citrus fragrance and pleasantness (4.9/5): A strong but enjoyable, relatively natural-smelling fresh lemon scent that I can notice for around eight hours in my routine.
Skin comfort and tolerance (3.7/5): Comfortable and fairly quick-drying most days, but it can sting considerably on freshly shaved underarms and sometimes after a shower.
Pump, application and bottle (4.8/5): The non-aerosol pump sprays evenly, has been reliable, and the glass bottle and cap feel easy to handle. I only used it at home.
Price and overall value (3.8/5): €12 per 100 ml is a little expensive to me, but the bottles lasted well and I bought this deodorant repeatedly.
Calculation: (2.8 × 35%) + (4.9 × 25%) + (3.7 × 15%) + (4.8 × 10%) + (3.8 × 15%) = 3.810/5, rounded to 3.8/5. For a person who only wants a great smell, their personal verdict could be higher. For someone who needs serious sports-day odour control, it could be lower.
Frequently asked questions
How long have I personally used Weleda Citrus Fresh?
Roughly 17 months, across three 100 ml bottles. I bought two of those bottles on May 13, 2025; the earliest purchase date is unknown. The last bottle is now approximately 90% used.
How long does the lemon scent last?
I can notice it for about eight hours in my normal routine. That is a subjective fragrance observation, not proof of eight hours without sweat odour.
Does it prevent body odour during workouts?
Not well enough for me. When I sweat heavily, I still notice unwanted odour, although the lemon fragrance remains pleasant. I am looking for a better option for my active days.
Is Weleda Citrus Fresh an antiperspirant?
No. Weleda identifies this as an aluminium-free deodorant, not a sweat-blocking antiperspirant. It is intended to deal with odour, not reduce how much you perspire.
Does it sting after shaving?
Yes, it can sting considerably on my freshly shaved underarms. The formula includes alcohol and citrus fragrance components; I have not identified the precise cause of the irritation.
Does it dry quickly or feel sticky?
It dries relatively quickly for me and is usually comfortable, with no bothersome stickiness under normal conditions.
Is the glass spray bottle good for travel?
The pump, cap and grip work well at home. I have not regularly travelled with it or tested leak and drop resistance, so I cannot offer a tested travel verdict.
Would I pay €12 again?
Perhaps, because I love the scent and the bottle lasts well. I have already purchased a different deodorant to see whether I can get stronger odour control or better value before deciding.
Exact product, original photos and editorial sources
This review covers the Weleda Citrus Fresh Deo Spray in the green 100 ml glass bottle with white non-aerosol pump, not the Weleda roll-on, herbal/floral scents or the 200 ml refill format. My five original photographs show the full bottle, its back label, nozzle, a spraying demonstration on tissue and the bottle in my hand.

Weleda’s official English Citrus Fresh product page and German product page confirm the 100 ml format, aluminium-free non-aerosol spray, and list alcohol, triethyl citrate and citrus oil/fragrance components. Exact ingredient lists can change; rely on the current bottle label for sensitivities. The manufacturer warns to avoid eyes and mucous membranes and notes the product is flammable. Keep away from flames and heat, and do not spray into eyes or onto damaged skin.
