Alnatura Organic Basmati Rice Review: 2 kg Later

Alnatura Organic Himalaya Basmati Rice 1 kg bag front view

I bought five 1 kg bags of Alnatura Organic Himalaya Basmati Rice on September 1, 2026 for about €4.01 (about US$4.65 at the September 2026 exchange rate) per bag, or roughly €20 (about US$23 at the September 2026 exchange rate) for 5 kg. By the time of this review I had eaten around 2 kg, usually cooking it once or twice per week in my Russell Hobbs rice cooker.

The biggest reason I would buy it again is simple: it tastes excellent. The rice has the aromatic flavor I expect from basmati, cooks up soft and fluffy without becoming overly sticky, reheats well, and has given me no obvious quality problems so far.

Alnatura Organic Himalaya Basmati Rice — 4.7/5

Quick verdict: One of the best rice products I have personally tasted. It is aromatic, soft and fluffy without becoming overly sticky, reheats well, and was very good value at the price I paid.

Best for: people who eat rice regularly and want an aromatic basmati for chili, bowls, curries and meal prep.

Main drawbacks: the 1 kg bag is not resealable, and a small amount sticks to the bottom of my rice cooker — although I think the cooker is largely responsible for that.

What I like
  • Excellent aromatic basmati flavor
  • Soft, fluffy texture without becoming overly sticky
  • Very good value at about €4.01 (about US$4.65 at the September 2026 exchange rate)/kg
  • Still tastes good after 1–2 days in the refrigerator
  • No stones, foreign objects or strange smells in roughly 2 kg eaten
  • Simple one-ingredient product
What could be better
  • The bag cannot be resealed
  • Roughly 5–10% can stick to the bottom of my rice cooker, though I suspect the cooker more than the rice
Bottom line: 4.7/5. The flavor, texture, quality and value are all excellent in my experience. The packaging is the clearest product-level weakness.

How I tested it

  • Purchased: September 1, 2026
  • Quantity purchased: 5 × 1 kg bags
  • Price paid: approximately €4.01 (about US$4.65 at the September 2026 exchange rate) per bag, around €20 (about US$23 at the September 2026 exchange rate) total
  • Consumed before review: approximately 2 kg
  • Cooking frequency: usually 1–2 times per week
  • Main cooking method: Russell Hobbs rice cooker
  • Main dishes: chili sin carne and rice bowls
  • Storage test: eaten after 1–2 days in the refrigerator and reheated in a microwave

The current product listing describes it as white organic basmati rice, with basmati rice from organic farming as the only listed ingredient. My review is based on my own cooking and eating experience rather than laboratory testing.

Taste is the biggest reason I would buy it again

The flavor is easily the strongest part of this rice for me.

It has a very pleasant, aromatic basmati character and tastes like what I associate with classic basmati rice. Compared with supermarket rice and jasmine rice I have tried, I noticeably prefer the flavor of this Alnatura rice.

I would genuinely describe it as one of the best rice products I have tasted.

My cooked Alnatura basmati rice after preparation in a Russell Hobbs rice cooker.

Texture: soft, fluffy and not overly sticky

When I get the water level right, the rice comes out relatively soft and fluffy. The grains do not become excessively sticky, which suits the dishes I normally make.

I use it most often with chili sin carne. I also make bowls with ingredients such as avocado, edamame and soy or teriyaki-style sauces.

It works well both as a simple side and as the main carbohydrate base of a meal.

I rinse it very thoroughly

One thing I notice when rinsing is that the water initially becomes very cloudy and can look grayish. I do not know exactly what all of that visible residue is, so I am not going to speculate about it.

In practice, I simply rinse the rice very thoroughly. I put it in the rice cooker, let plenty of water run through it and wait until the water becomes much clearer before cooking.

The current product directions use a different method: 125 g of rice with roughly double the amount of salted water, simmered for about 10 minutes and then left to swell for another five minutes. I primarily use my rice cooker instead.

A small amount sticks to my rice cooker

Usually around 5–10% of the rice sticks somewhat to the bottom of my Russell Hobbs rice cooker.

I do not think this is necessarily a problem with the Alnatura rice. Lentils and other foods also stick in the same cooker, so I suspect the appliance itself is largely responsible.

My take: I count the sticking as a minor practical annoyance, but I do not heavily penalize the rice for it because the same thing happens with other foods in my cooker.

It reheats very well

I frequently cook enough rice for more than one meal.

After one or two days in the refrigerator, I simply reheat it in the microwave and find that both the taste and texture are still good.

That makes it a useful option for meal prep or for anyone who prefers cooking several portions at once.

The packaging is practical, but it should be resealable

The 1 kg bag is easy enough to handle and pour from.

The main packaging weakness is that there is no built-in resealable closure. Once opened, you need another container, some way of clipping the bag shut, or you simply leave it open.

Quality has been excellent so far

After eating roughly 2 kg, I have not found stones, foreign objects, strange smells or obvious inconsistencies that concerned me.

The organic, vegan and vegetarian labels were not major reasons I bought it. I chose it because the reviews looked strong and the price seemed reasonable.

I do like that the ingredient list is simple: the current listing identifies the product as basmati rice from organic farming.

Value for money is very good

I paid approximately €4.01 (about US$4.65 at the September 2026 exchange rate)/kg, and at that price I consider the value excellent.

Based on my experience so far, I would still consider buying it at up to roughly €6/kg.

That is a strong endorsement from me because price was one of the main reasons I tried it in the first place.

Why I rate Alnatura Organic Himalaya Basmati Rice 4.7/5

My overall rating is 4.7/5. This follows the public Jon Tests rating method: criteria relevant to the product total 100%, each criterion is scored from 1.0 to 5.0 from the documented first-hand evidence, and the weighted result is rounded to one decimal place.

Value for money 15% 4.8/5 Excellent at the approximately €4.01 (about US$4.65 at the September 2026 exchange rate)/kg I paid, and I would still consider it at a higher price.

Weighted rating 4.7/5 4.705 before rounding.

Who should buy it?

  • Good fit: people who eat rice regularly and enjoy aromatic basmati.
  • Good fit: chili, curry, bowl and meal-prep recipes.
  • Good fit: anyone who wants a straightforward one-ingredient organic basmati at a reasonable price.
  • Less important: you do not need to specifically care about organic food to appreciate the taste; that was not why I bought it.

Would I buy it again?

Yes.

I bought five kilograms because the price looked attractive and the reviews were strong. After eating roughly two kilograms, I am very happy with that decision.

When I eventually run out, this is absolutely a rice I would consider ordering again.
