Segway Ninebot MAX G2 E Review: 10,000 km Across 3 Scooters
I have owned three Segway Ninebot KickScooter MAX G2s and ridden roughly 10,000 km across them. I estimate about 2,000 km on my first, 5,000 km on my second, and around 3,000 km on my current MAX G2 E. The first two were stolen rather than replaced because of mechanical failures.
I bought my current 25 km/h MAX G2 E on December 27, 2023 for 6,951 DKK (about US$1,036 at the December 2023 exchange rate). After almost three years of year-round use, it remains one of the best-riding e-scooters I have tried. The suspension, stability, wide deck and usable real-world range are excellent. The major downside is simple: it is heavy, and living on the third floor has changed how I feel about owning one.

Segway Ninebot MAX G2 E — 4.4/5
Quick verdict: The MAX G2 E is exceptionally stable and comfortable for an e-scooter. I get about 30 km of real-world range at roughly 100 kg while riding in Sport mode, the suspension is excellent, and I have had no meaningful mechanical or software problems on my current scooter. But at roughly 24.25 kg stock — and closer to 27 kg with my accessories — carrying it up three floors is easily the biggest drawback.
Best for: riders who can store and charge it at ground level, in a house, garage or building with an elevator.
Skip if: you regularly need to carry your scooter up stairs or cannot comfortably lift a heavy e-scooter.
- Excellent front and rear suspension
- Very stable and well balanced at 25 km/h
- Wide, comfortable deck with enough room to place my feet side by side
- Strong acceleration and good hill performance for my use
- Reliable brakes, tires, folding mechanism and electronics
- Apple Find My and a useful Segway app
- Excellent indicators plus strong front and rear lighting
- My three scooters have felt consistent in ride quality
- Very heavy if you need to carry it upstairs
- Awkward to secure unless you have a good scooter-friendly lock
- Real-world range for me is around 30 km, far below the headline 70 km theoretical figure
- Standing for the entire trip is less relaxing than a bicycle or moped with a seat
- The folding mechanism can require more force than some riders may find comfortable
My MAX G2 ownership history: three scooters and about 10,000 km
- MAX G2 #1: approximately 2,000 km before it was stolen
- MAX G2 #2: approximately 5,000 km before it was stolen
- Current MAX G2 E: approximately 3,000 km
- Current unit purchased: December 27, 2023
- Price paid: 6,951 DKK (about US$1,036 at the December 2023 exchange rate)
- Rider weight: approximately 100 kg
- Typical mode: Sport
- Conditions: all seasons, including rain, cold, snow and slush
- Repairs: no workshop visits or brake adjustment needed on the current scooter
I kept buying the MAX G2 because I wanted strong range and because I had heard good things about its stability and balance. After owning three, they have felt remarkably consistent to me.
Real-world range: about 30 km for me, not 70 km
Segway advertises up to 70 km of theoretical range, but that figure is measured under much easier conditions than my normal riding. Segway says its 70 km test uses a 75 kg rider at around 15–16 km/h in controlled conditions.
I weigh around 100 kg and ride almost exclusively in Sport mode at up to 25 km/h. Under those conditions, I would estimate my realistic range at roughly 30 km. In my use, winter range has not felt dramatically different from summer range.
Segway also lists approximately 50 km at maximum speed under its test conditions. My own result is lower, but my higher rider weight and riding style make that unsurprising.
I suspect my current battery may have lost around 10–15% of its original capacity after almost three years and roughly 3,000 km, but I have not measured battery health directly, so that is only my subjective estimate.
Ride quality is the main reason I love it
The suspension is one of the MAX G2 E’s best features. Compared with rental scooters such as Lime and cheaper Xiaomi-style scooters I have tried, the MAX G2 rides noticeably better.
The front and rear suspension make rough cycle paths, small bumps and uneven surfaces much more comfortable. The scooter also feels planted rather than nervous at 25 km/h.

The steering feels precise, and the scooter has always felt stable and predictable to me.
Acceleration, hills and braking
In Sport mode, acceleration feels strong. It reaches 25 km/h comfortably on flat roads and feels quicker off the line than many ordinary e-bikes I encounter.
It has also handled the hills I ride without losing much speed, although my local riding does not include many genuinely steep climbs.
The brakes have been strong, predictable and easy to modulate. I have not needed to adjust or service them on my current scooter.
My tires have been remarkably trouble-free

I have never had a puncture on these MAX G2s and have not had to replace a tire on my current one. Segway uses 10-inch tubeless self-sealing tires. I cannot say whether the self-sealing layer has ever quietly stopped a puncture because I have no way to verify that.
I also have not routinely topped up the tire pressure. That is simply my experience, not a recommendation to skip pressure checks; riders should follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.
Almost no maintenance or reliability problems
After roughly 3,000 km on my current scooter, I have not had loose steering, squeaking, folding-mechanism problems, braking issues, software errors or app failures.
It has never needed a workshop visit.
Across all three MAX G2s, my reason for replacing the first two was theft, not reliability.
The weight is the biggest problem
Segway lists the MAX G2 E at approximately 24.25 kg. With my lock, phone mount, hook and other additions, I estimate mine is closer to 27 kg.
I currently carry it to the third floor to charge it. I can do that, but it is the single thing I dislike most about ownership. If it has been raining, carrying it against my clothes can also leave them dirty.
When I owned my earlier MAX G2s, I lived on the ground floor, and the whole ownership experience was substantially easier.
The scooter folds easily for me, although my girlfriend finds the folding mechanism difficult because it requires a reasonable amount of force. Taking it on a train or bus is manageable for me, but stairs are where the weight becomes a genuine problem.
The deck and handlebar are excellent

The deck is spacious enough that I can place my feet side by side, which contributes to the stable feel. I also like the handlebar width; it feels comfortable for my shoulders and elbows rather than cramped.
Lights, indicators and app features
The front light is very good for my city use and throws useful light onto the cycle path. The rear light is also clear and easy to see.

The built-in indicators are particularly good. They are easy to activate, visible and provide audible feedback. In my experience, they are much more obvious than the hand signalling setup you rely on when cycling.
The Segway app has also been reliable. I can adjust settings related to acceleration, braking and efficiency, see mileage information, and use Apple Find My. Find My is one of the features I value most given that two of my previous scooters were stolen.
Rain, winter and slippery conditions
Segway rates the scooter body at IPX5 and the battery pack at IPX7. Those are water-resistance ratings, not a guarantee that the entire scooter is waterproof in every situation.
My current scooter has handled heavy rain without obvious water damage, rust or electrical problems. I am careful to close the charging-port cover and would avoid deep standing water.
I have also ridden in cold weather, slush, snow and on icy surfaces. The scooter felt surprisingly stable to me, and I have never fallen from it. That is not a recommendation to ride on ice: traction can disappear suddenly, and my experience does not make icy riding inherently safe.
The MAX G2 includes traction control, but I cannot honestly say that I have personally noticed the system intervening.
Charging
With my faster charger, a normal charging session feels like roughly two hours depending on the starting percentage. With the standard charging setup, I estimate roughly three to four hours from around 20% to full in my own use.
Segway’s official specification lists about six hours for a standard single-charge cycle, so my informal estimates should not be treated as a controlled 0–100% charging test.
I have not noticed problematic heat from the scooter or charger.
My modifications and accessories
My scooter does not look stock anymore. I deliberately added accessories and cosmetic changes because I use it as practical transport rather than as a display piece.
| Modification | My experience | Would I do it again? |
|---|---|---|
| Phone mount | Very useful for Google Maps and does not vibrate excessively | Yes |
| Bag / shopping hook | Has carried around 10 kg; I notice some balance change but it remains useful | Yes |
| Lock | Essential, but my current short lock is awkward to attach to some fixed objects | Yes, but I would choose a longer scooter-specific design |
| Alarm | I do not currently keep batteries in it; I mainly leave it visible as a deterrent | Probably not |
| Reflective spray | Makes the scooter much more visible when illuminated and also deliberately makes it less visually attractive | Maybe — it is difficult to remove and I overdid it aesthetically |
The reflective spray is my own modification, not something I would recommend everyone copy. It adheres extremely well and has been difficult to remove. My intention was both visibility and making the scooter less attractive to thieves.
Security is still awkward
Two previous MAX G2s being stolen has made security an important part of ownership for me.
The scooter itself is not especially convenient to lock to street furniture unless you have the right lock. My current lock is quite short and can be frustrating because the scooter has to sit close to exactly the right anchor point.
If I were buying a new lock specifically for this scooter, I would look for a longer scooter-oriented design that gives more flexibility around posts and bike stands.
Value: good product, but my living situation changes the equation
I paid 6,951 DKK (about US$1,036 at the December 2023 exchange rate) in December 2023. I consider that fair value because the ride quality, range, durability and features have justified the cost for me.
But what I would pay today depends heavily on where I lived. While living on the third floor, I would personally want to pay closer to 4,000 DKK because carrying it has become such a major inconvenience.
If I lived on the ground floor, had an elevator or had a house where I could roll it directly into storage, I would personally be willing to pay as much as roughly 9,000 DKK for this level of ride quality and convenience.
Why I rate the Segway Ninebot MAX G2 E 4.4/5
My overall rating is 4.4/5. The MAX G2 E rides exceptionally well and has been extremely reliable for me, but its weight and portability are substantial downsides.
| Criterion | Weight | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ride quality & stability | 25% | 5.0/5 | The suspension, balance and stable handling are the biggest reasons I kept buying the MAX G2. |
| Reliability & durability | 20% | 4.9/5 | No workshop visits, punctures, brake issues, folding faults or software problems on my current scooter. |
| Range & performance | 15% | 4.2/5 | About 30 km real-world range for my ~100 kg Sport-mode riding, with strong acceleration and good hill performance. |
| Portability | 15% | 2.6/5 | The roughly 24.25 kg stock weight is the major weakness, especially on stairs. |
| Comfort & features | 15% | 4.8/5 | Wide deck, comfortable handlebar, excellent suspension, indicators, lighting, app and Find My. |
| Value | 10% | 4.3/5 | 6,951 DKK (about US$1,036 at the December 2023 exchange rate) felt fair for the quality and durability, although the value is much more situational if you have to carry it daily. |
| Weighted rating | 4.4/5 | Rounded to one decimal place. | |
Who should buy the MAX G2 E?
- Best for: someone with ground-floor storage, an elevator, garage or house.
- Best for: riders who prioritize suspension, stability, range and comfort over low weight.
- Best for: city riders who want a premium-feeling e-scooter rather than a lightweight basic model.
- Think twice if: you regularly need to carry it up stairs.
- Think twice if: lifting a 24+ kg scooter would be difficult for you.
- Consider another vehicle if: you strongly prefer sitting for longer journeys.
Would I buy a fourth MAX G2?
Probably not — but mostly because my living situation changed.
If this one were stolen tomorrow, I would now be more likely to buy a good e-bike. I am tired of carrying a heavy scooter to the third floor to charge it.
That is not because I stopped liking the MAX G2. When I lived on the ground floor, it was a much easier product to own, and the riding experience still impresses me.
If I had to describe it in one sentence: the Segway Ninebot MAX G2 E is one of the best-riding e-scooters I have used, with great range, suspension and stability, but it is heavy and can be a pain to own if you need to carry it up stairs.
Frequently asked questions
What real-world range do I get from the MAX G2 E?
At around 100 kg and riding almost exclusively in Sport mode, I estimate roughly 30 km in my normal use.
Is the Segway MAX G2 E comfortable?
Yes. The front and rear suspension are among the strongest parts of the scooter, and the wide deck gives me plenty of room for my feet.
Is the MAX G2 E heavy?
Yes. Segway lists about 24.25 kg stock, and my modified scooter is probably closer to 27 kg. Carrying it to a third-floor apartment is the biggest problem I have with it.
Has it been reliable?
Very reliable in my use. My current scooter has around 3,000 km and has not needed a workshop visit, brake adjustment, tire replacement or software repair.
Is the MAX G2 E waterproof?
I would describe it as water resistant, not fully waterproof. Segway lists IPX5 for the body and IPX7 for the battery pack. Mine has handled heavy rain, but I still close the charging-port cover and avoid deep water.
Is Apple Find My useful?
Yes. After having two previous scooters stolen, Find My is one of the features I value most.
